If, by chance, someone alerts you to the existence of Mangga Madu (Mango Honey) Restaurant in Ubud then consider yourself lucky, as you are about to discover one of those off-the-beaten-track gems that cater equally to local as well as international sensibilities with a menu and an ambiance that is at once unpretentious and appealing.
I was surprised to discover that even long time residents had yet to add Mangga Madu to their list of affordable but decent culinary destinations. I am not a food critic so I’m not going to give you the juicy details of their fare, but when you find yourself several times a week in the same place it’s safe to say food, value, and atmosphere are in rare harmony. Add to that the always cheerful waitresses and the quick service and the universe just seems perfect. Seating is spread out among several areas surrounding the “courtyard”, ranging from tables and chairs to cushions in a gazebo setting. There’s no wifi, but if you have ever eaten at Warung Mina just across the street and captured their wifi settings you’ll do just dandy with your iPad or iPhone.
With its neighborhood eatery charm, Mangga Madu is worth the trip if good taste and good value are on your menu. You’ll find the resto at Jalan Gunung Sari, right behind the big statue at the intersection of Ubud’s Main Road and Tegalalang Road.
